Leadership and community involvement are integral parts of Kim Keenan’s life.
In August 2004, Ms. Keenan was installed as the 62nd President of the National Bar Association (NBA), the oldest and largest bar association of lawyers of color. She was the first woman from the District of Columbia to be elected to this post and only the 8th woman in the organization’s 80 year history to serve as the chief executive officer. She is the immediate Past President of the Washington Bar Association, one of the oldest and largest affiliates of the National Bar Association. She is only the third woman president in the 80 year history of the organization. Additionally, she has served as Treasurer of the Bar Association of the District of Columbia, the largest voluntary bar in the District of Columbia and the first African American to serve in this position.
In addition to her various leadership roles, Ms. Keenan is committed to teaching and mentoring students. She currently serves on the Senior Adjunct Faculty of George Washington University Law Center where she co-teaches Pretrial Advocacy. Additionally, she is the Civil Procedure Lecturer for the Charles Hamilton Houston Law Preparatory Course at Georgetown University Law Center.
Ms. Keenan is also very active in the community. She was the first African American elected to serve as President of District of Columbia Rape Crisis Center, the largest resource center for survivors of sexual assault. She currently serves on the boards of the Equal Rights Center and the District of Columbia Chapter of the American Lung Association. Additionally, she serves on the board of directors of IDAMAR Enterprises, a private marketing and communications company.
She has been the recipient of many prestigious awards, includingfive Presidential Awards from the National Bar Association, an Award of Merit by the Woman Lawyers Division, National Bar Association, a Presidential Award by the Bar Association of the District of Columbia, and an Outstanding Achievement Award and Presidential Award from the Washington Bar Association. She has also been honored with the Hon. Annice M. Wagner Pioneers Award from the Young Lawyers Division of the Bar Association of the District of Columbia and the Frederick B. Abramsom Award by the American Bar Association and the National Association of Black Women Attorneys.
Ms. Keenan was featured on Fox’s “Power of Attorney” and “Dayside” television shows. She has been a commentator for Fox News and was also featured on CNN’s “Attorney-At-Law.”
Ms. Keenan is a native of Buffalo, New York. She is a graduate of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and the University of Virginia School of Law.
