Project Assistant (PA)

The Equal Rights Center (ERC) is a private not-for-profit civil rights organization founded in 1983 as the Fair Housing Council of Greater Washington. In 1999, we merged with the Fair Employment Council of Greater Washington to form the Equal Rights Center. In 2005 we were joined by the Disability Rights Council and its membership. Today, the ERC is dedicated to identifying, challenging, and eliminating illegal discrimination in housing, employment, public accommodations, and government services through education, research, testing, counseling, enforcement, and advocacy. Our initiatives are designed to ensure greater compliance with federal, state and local civil rights laws.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Project Assistants provide integral staff support to the ERC’s Program Managers in executing all aspects of the ERC’s civil rights mission, including complaint intake, test coordination, compiling information for reports, and conducting research; and participating in education and outreach activities.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of B.S. or B.A. in a related field (including liberal arts, social science, law, psychology, or urban studies) is preferred.
- A demonstrated interest in civil rights or social justice issues through professional experience or academic coursework is preferred, but not a requirement. More importantly, the applicant must demonstrate dedication to fulfilling the mission and goals of the ERC.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, organizational and time management skills, and the ability to simultaneously work on and track multiple projects.
- Ability to relate comfortably to people of various backgrounds and must be able to exhibit patience, tact, and respect when dealing with the general public, ERC community partners and clients, and ERC staff members.
- Candidates must be fully bilingual in English and Spanish.

Salary: Commensurate with experience

Civil Rights Intern

Public Relations Volunteer Intern
College student or graduate with a major in public relations, journalism, communications, or related course of study to serve as a Public Relations intern to support the outreach, education, and communications goals of the Equal Rights Center.
Duties:
- Assist with writing, editing and production of the ERC annual report, newsletters, web content, presentations, etc.
- Assist with the planning and promotion of special events.
- Assist with the expansion of ERC membership program.
- Identify and participate in community outreach projects throughout the community.
- Assist with the creation of ERC publications such as brochures and fliers.
- Maintain ERC media and mailing lists.
Qualifications: Skilled in drafting basic, coherent, news releases and/or articles; proven ability to create attractive publications using desktop publishing software; skilled in navigating the Internet especially for research purposes; ability to easily communicate with the public.
Hours: Flexible
Compensation: This is a volunteer position however the ERC will cooperate to ensure that interns receive academic credit, if desired or needed.
