File a Complaint
If you believe that you or someone you know has been a victim of illegal discrimination, you should immediately contact the ERC. If you are not certain if your circumstance is covered by the law, contact the ERC anyway. The Equal Rights Center will listen carefully and advise you if there seems to be sufficient cause for you to come to our offices to be interviewed.
Often, the ERC staff will engage in counseling or advocacy on someone's behalf to quickly and effectively resolve the complaint. Other times the ERC staff assists the individual to file a complaint with the appropriate government agency. The ERC might also find it necessary to become party to the complaint. Without any charge to you, the ERC will listen to what you wish to tell us, conduct an investigation where warranted, and, in accord with the results, do everything in its power to bring about the best possible results.
Should further legal action be needed, the ERC works closely with its counsel, the Washington Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs. Through the Committee’s offices, the ERC is privileged to work as well with many law firms in the area.In this way, when absolutely necessary, and as a last resort, the ERC is able to employ the litigation process to fight discrimination.
