Communications and Outreach Manager

 

The Communications and Outreach Manager carries out the outreach, education, and communications goals of the ERC and reports directly to the Executive Director. The Communications and Outreach Manager must clearly and precisely communicate and exchange information among the ERC staff and the public, community partners, and clients.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Communications and Outreach Manager is responsible for various assignments including: writing, editing and producing newsletters, web content, presentations, brochures, manuals, media releases, grant proposals;  planning and promoting special events; pitching news stories; liaising with current ERC members and recruiting new members; identifying and participating in outreach events and projects throughout the DC metropolitan area;  providing regular trainings in both fair lending and fair housing; maintaining client relations and assisting in the development of new business initiatives; periodically updating the website; helping to maintain ERC media, mailing and membership lists; compiling information for reports and conducting research; managing volunteers and the volunteer program; coordinating regular professional development trainings; serving as a  point of contact for general phone, mail, and e-mail inquiries; leading monthly staff meetings; disseminating current news and information to the staff as needed; maintaining confidentiality; and completing other duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE AND QUALIFICATIONS

It is imperative that the Communications and Outreach Manager possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, organizational and time management skills, and the ability to simultaneously work on and track multiple projects. The Communications and Outreach Manager must think and act as a true team player but also work independently with limited supervision when necessary.

 

The Communications and Outreach Manager must relate comfortably to people of various backgrounds and exhibit patience, tact, and respect when dealing with the general public, ERC community partners and clients, and ERC staff members.

 

Candidates must be skilled in writing media releases and articles; possess some knowledge of proposal writing; have proven ability to create attractive publications using basic desktop publishing software; be skilled in navigating the Internet especially for research purposes; and have the ability to easily communicate with the public. Media relations experience is a must.

 

A valid driver’s license and proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are required.

 

The ideal candidate has experience with, or background in, housing or employment law and a demonstrated interest in civil rights or social justice issues through professional experience or academic coursework.

 

Agency experience is a plus.

 

A minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience is preferred.

 

MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in public relations, journalism, communications, English or related course of study.

 

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

Salary: Commensurate with experience

Benefits: Health insurance, dental insurance, life insurance, disability insurance, 3 personal days, 12 vacation days, and 12 sick days. This position may require some infrequent non-traditional work hours (i.e. early evening, week-ends).
