Startling New Report To Be Released Detailing Discrimination Domestic Violence Survivors Face in D.C.
WASHINGTON, D.C., April 17, 2008 – Councilman Jim Graham will join the Equal Rights Center (ERC) as it releases a groundbreaking new report that documents the prevalence of illegal discrimination against survivors of domestic violence in the District of Columbia. Graham was an original sponsor of the law, which forms the basis for the ERC’s report.
Tusday, April 22, 2008
10 a.m.-10:30 a.m.
John A. Wilson Building
1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W.
Room 103
Washington, D.C. 20004
Speaking at the news conference will be:
- Hon. Jim Graham, D.C. City Councilman, Ward 1
- Rabbi Bruce E. Kahn, Executive Director, Equal Rights Center
- Kenneth E. Noyes, Esq., Executive Director, D.C. Coalition Against Domestic Violence
- Kathy Zeisel, Domestic Violence Staff Attorney, National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty
In 2006 the D.C. City Council and mayor approved cutting-edge legislation, the Protections From Discriminatory Eviction for Victims of Domestic Violence Amendment Act of 2006.
This Act prohibits discrimination in housing against domestic violence survivors because of their status as survivors. A year after the law went into effect the ERC is releasing its ground breaking study – the first of its kind – to identify and track discrimination in housing against survivors of domestic violence in the District.
