What is the Multifamily Housing Resource Program (MHRP)?
The Equal Rights Center’s Multifamily Housing Resource Program (the "MHRP") is a membership program within the ERC’s Fair Housing Program offering developers a proactive approach to housing accessibility. The MHRP was initially created as a joint effort between the ERC and Trammell Crow Residential as a result of their shared recognition of the need for accessible housing. The MHRP mission is focused on: (1) increasing the number of residential housing units and properties in the United States that are accessible to persons with disabilities, and (2) enhancing housing industry collaboration in the compliance with accessibility laws.
Program Overview
The MHRP offers a variety of resources that any multifamily housing development, design or construction company may employ in all phases of a multifamily housing project to maximize awareness of, and compliance with the accessibility requirements of the federal Fair Housing Act (FHA), the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and local accessibility laws.
The MHRP reflects the more than 25 years of experience by the ERC with federal and local civil rights laws. The MHRP seeks to combine accessibility "best practices" with developers’ desires to learn more about fair housing accessibility issues. The MHRP was established in November 2008 and consists of several components that are tailored to meet the individual needs of your organization.
These include:
- Corporate policy and best practices evaluation;
- Advertising review;
- Comprehensive training on FHA and ADA accessibility issues;
- Fair Housing training for management and staff;
- Confidential Fair Housing "testing;" and
- Accessibility resources, referrals and technical support.
The MHRP draws upon its expertise in the areas of accessibility issues in multifamily housing to provide up to the minute developments concerning accessibility issues through a password protected "members only" Web site.
