Access to Public Accommodations
Federal civil rights laws require that each of us has equal access to public accommodations. It is not acceptable to provide unequal treatment to someone because of one’s:
- Race
- Color
- National Origin
- Religion
Many local human rights laws, such as in Washington, D.C., also protect from this type of discrimination based on:
- Sex
- Age
- Marital Status
- Familial Status
- Family Responsibilities
- Personal Appearance
- Sexual Orientation
- Matriculation
- Disability
- Political Affiliation
- Source of Income
- Place of Residence or Business
Protected groups have the right under the law to expect fair and equal access to government benefits, activities, services and programs. For years, the ERC has targeted discriminatory actions in all places of business that provide goods or services to the public.
Public Accommodations include, but are not limited to retail stores, hotels, restaurants, movie theaters, private schools, convention centers, doctors’ offices, homeless shelters, transportation depots, zoos, funeral homes, day care centers, recreation facilities including sports stadiums and fitness clubs. Transportation services provided by both public and private entities are also covered.
If you believe that you or someone you know has been the victim of illegal discrimination when seeking equal access to public accommodations, contact the Equal Rights Center at (202) 234-3062 or by e-mail at info@equalrightscenter.org.
