We are currently accepting applications for the Summer 2013 Civil Rights Internships and Communications Internship. Applications will be accepted until April 12th or until position filled. Interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis. No phone calls, please.
Thank you for your interest in the ERC’s civil rights internship program! ERC interns gain real world experience in current civil rights issues and advocacy. Three times throughout the year we welcome a select number of interns to our Washington, D.C. office to help us with our efforts. By participating in our daily work, interns learn about how the ERC uses a multi-faceted approach to advance civil rights in the Washington D.C. area and throughout the United States.

Civil Rights Internship
Description:
The Equal Rights Center is seeking applicants who will be in the Washington, D.C. area during summer 2013 to participate in our Civil Rights Internship Program. Civil Rights Interns work closely with the staff of the ERC to combat illegal discrimination in the Washington, DC area and across the nation. Interns work on a variety of substantive tasks related to ongoing studies, investigations, and complaints, and also help out with day-to-day administrative duties. The Summer Internship runs from June 2012 through August 2012. Interns are expected to commit to working 40 hours per week and will receive a $150 weekly stipend.
The Equal Rights Center (ERC) is a national non-profit civil rights organization based in Washington, D.C. With members located in every state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Canada, the ERC works nationally to promote equal opportunity in housing, employment, and access to public accommodations and government services. The ERC employs a variety of tools in advancing civil rights, including education and outreach, training, advocacy, research, testing, investigation, and enforcement.
The duties of a Civil Rights Internship include:
• Conducting intakes: receiving phone calls from people who have experienced discrimination and advising them on their options;
• Conducting research for reports and investigations;
• Participating in community education and outreach events;
• Acting as civil rights testers;
• Drafting newsletter articles for quarterly report;
• Updating membership and donor database, assist communication with members; and
• Answering phone calls, assisting with filing, completing other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Include:
• Demonstrated passion and interest in civil rights;
• Strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and customer-service skills;
• Good organizational, time management, customer service, and problem-solving skills and the ability to work accurately and meet deadlines with frequent interruptions;
• Ability to work well independently as well as part of a team;
• Ability to exercise flexibility, initiative, good judgment and discretion;
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of ERC projects.

College students or graduates with a major in public relations, journalism, communications, or related programs are encouraged to apply.
The duties of a Communications Internship include:
• Assisting with the production of annual reports, newsletters, web content, presentations, etc.
• Updating social networking sites – facebook and twitter – daily
• Drafting blog entries and updating blog multiple times a week
• Helping draft and develop website copy
• Entering new members into database
• Helping develop social media and online strategy
• Updating website as needed
• Researching media contacts and blogs for material and press release distribution
• Assisting with the planning and promotion of special events
• Assisting with the expansion of ERC membership program
• Assisting with the creation of ERC publications such as brochures and fliers
Qualifications Include:
• Skills in drafting basic, coherent, news releases and/or articles
• Proven ability to create attractive publications using desktop publishing software
• Skills in navigating the Internet for research purposes
• Comfort in communicating with the public
• A demonstrated passion and interest in civil rights
• Strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and customer-service skills
• Good organizational, time management, customer service and problem-solving skills and the ability to work accurately and meet deadlines with frequent interruptions
• Ability to work well independently as well as part of a team
• Ability to exercise flexibility, initiative, good judgment and discretion
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of ERC projects
• Experience with Adobe InDesign and Photoshop is a plus
